Training Is Not a Punishment — It’s a Superpower

When I founded Ethos Human Capital Solutions 18 years ago, I aimed to be The People Problem Solver®, providing business leaders with practical solutions and insightful guidance to navigate the complexities of HR, allowing them to focus on what they do best: building their business.

I’m proud to say, we’ve done just that. While training has always been my first love, the demand for HR counsel quickly took center stage in the early days and continues today. I still love training and watching the transformation of the attendees. Whether it is management training, DiSC® based teambuilding, or any king of “how-to” training, seeing the attendees transform into better-equipped people who understand the nuances of better team communication never gets old to me. If you are a frequent reader, you probably know this, as I love to compare your team to professional sports teams in how their connection leads to better team performance. Believe it or not, I also like the mandatory compliance training sessions. What is better than equipping your team with the right tools and understanding the situations that may arise?

Here’s the thing: too many leaders treat training like a fire extinguisher—something to reach for when something goes wrong. “They messed up… let’s get them some training.” Sound familiar?

But using training as a disciplinary tool sends the wrong message. It tells employees that learning equals punishment. No wonder your team avoids it like a root canal. At Ethos, we flip that mindset. Training is not punishment—it’s a performance strategy, a culture builder, and your best line of defense against lawsuits, turnover, and chaos.

Trained Managers Make Better (and Safer) Decisions

The truth? Most of your company’s liability walks around wearing a manager badge. Without training, they may unknowingly violate wage, CFRA, harassment or other laws. They might skip documentation or mishandle performance issues, all things our team hears about every single week.

That’s why we created the Manager’s Toolkit Training: to help managers think critically, lead effectively, and recognize risk before it becomes a legal or operational nightmare. The managers who joined us in July left more confident, capable, and equipped. We’re hosting another session this year—and trust us, this is not a snoozefest with slides. It’s practical, relevant, and yes, even fun!

Training Isn’t One-and-Done

You wouldn’t expect lasting results from going to the gym once (although I continue to hope), and the same goes for training. Real change happens when training becomes part of how you do business. Growth comes from consistency, just like lifting weights at the gym. That’s why our management training program is designed to include coaching and real-life scenarios where your managers can flex their muscles and learn to lead with confidence. Faking it until you make it is not a management strategy!

?Compliance Training = Legal Protection

We get it, everyone’s busy. But if your excuse for skipping training this year is “we just don’t have time,” imagine how busy you’ll be dealing with a lawsuit!

California requires harassment prevention training for a reason: it’s effective, it’s preventative, and it shows you took reasonable steps to protect your people.

As of July 2024, the state also requires a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention Plan and annual training. That means you can’t afford to treat this as a check-the-box activity anymore. One of your primary jobs is to protect your business, and compliance training can give you some peace of mind.

Invest in What You Can Control

As we celebrate 18 years of helping businesses with their HR headaches, one thing we know for sure: training is your secret weapon. It’s how you empower your managers, protect your business, and create a culture people want to be part of. In a world where so much feels out of your control, training is one thing you can control—and it’s one of the smartest investments you’ll make.

Join us this October for our final Manager’s Toolkit session of the year. Let’s turn your managers into the leaders your team needs and your business deserves.
